International security provides a rigorous foundation for his work. It now informs a broader practice across organisational strategy, national resilience, energy security, climate-related pressure, infrastructure and public policy.
- Strategy and organisational transformation
At the Australian British Chamber of Commerce, Al established a strategy and portfolio-governance function and developed work across national resilience, energy, water, infrastructure, defence and emerging technology. Programme revenue increased by approximately 35 per cent during his period at the Chamber.
- Government, policy and geopolitical analysis
More than sixteen years across government, defence, NATO, the United Nations and UK–Australia business have involved advising ministers, senior executives and boards. This includes strategy and policy work connected with AUKUS and the Global Combat Air Programme.
- Crisis and national resilience
His strategic and crisis work has included Afghanistan, Somalia, the UK response to the Sudan evacuation and the Vanuatu earthquake response. These settings demand clear judgement, coordination and an understanding of how institutions perform under pressure.
- Leadership and complex delivery
Al has led multidisciplinary and international teams and directed an eleven-country security policy and capability portfolio with responsibility for approximately £5 million. His experience includes strategic planning, governance, decision support, crisis management and cross-functional delivery.
